Selecting Heavily Covered Points
نویسندگان
چکیده
A collection of geometric selection lemmas is proved, such as the following: For any set P of n points in three-dimensional space and any set ,9 of m spheres, where each sphere passes through a distinct point pair in P, there exists a point x, not necessarily in P, that is enclosed by f2 (m ! (n log )) of the spheres in S. Similar results apply in arbitrary fixed dimensions, and for geometric bodies other than spheres. The results have applications in reducing the size of geometric structures, such as three-dimensional Delaunay triangulations and Gabriel graphs, by adding extra points to their defining sets. Key words, discrete geometry, computational geometry, selecting points, covering, intervals, boxes, spheres, Delaunay triangulations, finite-element meshes, Gabriel graphs AMS subject classifications. 05B99, 51M99, 52A99, 68Q20, 68R05

On Gromov's Method of Selecting Heavily Covered Points
A result of Boros and Füredi (d = 2) and of Bárány (arbitrary d) asserts that for every d there exists cd > 0 such that for every n-point set P ⊂ R, some point of R is covered by at least cd ( n d+1 ) of the d-simplices spanned by the points of P . The largest possible value of cd has been the subject of ongoing research. Recently Gromov improved the existing lower bounds considerably by introd...
متن کاملA New Lower Bound Based on Gromov's Method of Selecting Heavily Covered Points
Boros and Füredi (for d = 2) and Bárány (for arbitrary d) proved that there exists a positive real number cd such that for every set P of n points in R d in general position, there exists a point of R contained in at least cd ( n d+1 ) d-simplices with vertices at the points of P . Gromov improved the known lower bound on cd by topological means. Using methods from extremal combinatorics, we im...
متن کاملThe Extent of Using Real Problems and Emphasizing Modelling in the 10th Grade Math Textbook
Modelling is emphasized heavily in the national math curriculum, yet the extent to which this concept is covered in the math textbooks is, while of great importance, unknown. To discover the extent to which this issue, and real problems in general, are covered in the 10th grade math textbooks, the content of the textbook for the ‘theoretical’ (“nazari”) branch was analyzed. In doing so, the vie...
متن کاملKey Factors for Position Errors in 802.11-based Indoor Positioning Systems
Indoor positioning systems based on 802.11 and fingerprints offer reasonably low position errors. We study the key factors for position errors by systematically investigating (1) the number of access points, (2) the number of samples in the training phase, (3) the number of samples in the position determination phase, and (4) the setup of the grid of reference points. Further, we squeeze out th...
متن کاملUsing core beliefs for point-based value iteration
Recent research on point-based approximation algorithms for POMDPs demonstrated that good solutions to POMDP problems can be obtained without considering the entire belief simplex. For instance, the Point Based Value Iteration (PBVI) algorithm [Pineau et al., 2003] computes the value function only for a small set of belief states and iteratively adds more points to the set as needed. A key comp...
